Victoria Parker, Senoir Editor, Dance

“Fábio Mariano graduated from Maria Olenewa Dance School and was in big productions of Ballet and Opera at the Municipal Theater of Rio de Janeiro. The Nutcracker, The Rite of Spring, Aida, Marguerite & Armand to name a few. In Brazil he performed classical and contemporary works by different choreographers with Caetano Cia. De Dança, Youth Ballet Company of Rio de Janeiro and Campos dos Goytacazes Dance Company. In the USA, he danced with Atlantic City Ballet as a principal and soloist in productions of Sleeping Beauty, The Nutcracker, Swan Lake, Carmen and more. Mr. Mariano is currently a dancer with Collage Dance Collective and has performed works by renowned choreographers nationally and internationally. He is also a ballet teacher at the Collage Dance Conservatory and the Co-Founder of Blacks in Ballet alongside Ruan Galdino and Ingrid Silva.”

As Mariano is currently in his company’s off season he has been traveling, teaching summer intensives, and choreographing too. He has been partnering with Blacks in Ballet to get the newest generation of dancers connected to incredible professional dancers through masterclasses.

Speaking about the COVID-19 quarantine, Mariano refers to it as a blessing. He had been dealing with an injury for over a year so this time gave him a chance to truly rest and heal. He practiced Pilates and worked with a chiropractor to ensure he got his body back in place. After this type of break he says it was difficult to get back into ballet shape, but with a lot of hard work he was able to get back to his usual ballet training level. After the quarantine he did classes at home and in the studio.

His tip for other dancers is to, “Take your time for whatever you need to do. Don’t do anything based on what other people are doing, we are all unique in our own ways.” He also says that he had a lot of support through both family connections and other dances that kept him hopeful and inspired for the future.

If you’d like to see Mariano dance, he will be performing with Collage Dance on September 23-25 for the Gala of the grand opening of their new building! The address is 505 Tillman St. Memphis, TN.

Mariano also says, “I am so happy to be back working in the studios and I hope that our come back to live performances are great. I also hope people are as hungry for live performances as we are hungry to perform for them!” So be sure to support the arts and our incredible dancers as they bring all they’ve got to the stage after this long break.
